Hi, I’m MB — anthropologist, perpetual student, coffee enthusiast, and proud parent of two extraordinary kids who continue to be my greatest teachers. I use they/them pronouns (though honestly, I’m perfectly happy if you just call me MB).

I’ve always been fascinated by what makes us human — the stories we tell, the cultures we build, the quiet ways we connect and understand one another. That’s probably why I ended up majoring in Anthropology, with focuses in Sociocultural and Archaeology, and minors in Native American Studies and Religious Studies. My academic path grew out of a personal mission: to learn the histories that were left out of the classrooms I grew up in, and to advocate for inclusion, truth, and empathy — especially for Indigenous communities and marginalized voices.

I live in Crescent City, a small coastal town framed by redwoods and ocean fog. It’s where I recharge — surrounded by the wild beauty that reminds me how small and connected we all are. When I’m not reading (usually more than one book at a time) or on a long drive thinking through a new idea, I’m probably outside doing “inside things” — studying, drinking coffee, or just existing — but somewhere better, like under the trees or next to the waves.

If you’ve ever felt out of place, if you’re trying to find balance in a life that doesn’t look like you planned, if you believe that kindness still matters — you’re in good company here.

My life, however, doesn’t follow a traditional script. One of my children, Kadlin, is medically complex. Living in and out of hospitals has reshaped everything I thought I knew about balance, advocacy, and grace. It’s taught me to find joy in small moments — a good cup of coffee, a smile from a nurse, a quiet walk — and to measure success by the quality of our days, not the number of them. Through it all, I’ve learned that empathy is not just an idea to study — it’s something you practice every day, especially when life gets hard.

I write about what I live: navigating parenthood, disability, science, and the messy intersections in between. I believe that our stories — even the painful, unpolished ones — connect us. We are far more similar than we are different. My hope, both as a writer and as a human, is to help others feel a little less alone in this big, complicated world.

So whether you’re here because you share my love for anthropology, or you’re just looking for another traveler on this winding road of learning and living — Welcome to My Corner of the World

If you’ve ever felt out of place, if you’re trying to find balance in a life that doesn’t look like you planned, if you believe that kindness still matters — you’re in good company here.

So pour a cup of coffee, pull up a chair (or a patch of grass), and join me. Let’s learn, grow, and keep building a world where everyone’s story is worth hearing.
